The Woodpecker Loom Woven Tapestry - Requires Rod Size 2
This tapestry was designed and produced by William Morris (1836-1896), the famous British artist and designer. It was woven circa 1885 on a high-warp loom, at Merton Abbey, Surrey. William Morris became well-known for his designs in the decorative arts and in development of various crafts, particularly tapestry-weaving. Favouring Medievalism and using the painstaking methods of the craftsman, he adapted the arts of the Middle Ages for the modern world at the end of the 19th Century. Morris re-introduced quality and style in the decorative arts, and experimented with vegetable dyes, developing a unique palette. From studying an old French Arts and Crafts manual, Morris taught himself the technique of weaving, and thereafter taught his workmen the technique, and is thereby attributed with reviving the craft of tapestry-weaving in England during the last quarter of the 19th century. The decorating firm of Morris, Marshall, Faulk & Co was established by William Morris in 1861 at Merton Abbey in Surrey, and became Morris & Company after 1874. J. H. Dearle became the artistic director of the company after Morriss death in 1896. This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
