The Forest Loom Woven Tapestry - Requires Rod Size 3
The Forest Tapestry is one of the finest collaborative tapestries designed by William Morris, in which he coordinated the various talents of his associates. The animals were designed by Philip Web, based on a charming series of drawings, and incorporated by Morris into a background of swirling acanthus leaves, in the style of his first tapestry, Vine and Acanthus (1879). The details in the foreground were added by J H Dearle. William Morris (1834-1896) became well-known for his designs in the decorative arts and the development of various crafts, including tapestry-weaving. Favouring Medievalism and using the painstaking methods of the craftsman, he adapted the arts of the Middle Ages for the modern world. Morris re-introduced quality and style in the decorative arts, and experimented with vegetable dyes, developing a unique palette. This design was woven circa 1887 by the weaving firm of Morris and Company at the Merton Abbey Workshops in Surrey. The tapestry was shown at the 1890 Arts and Crafts Exhibition and was purchased by Mr Alexander Ionides, who hung it in the study of his residence in Holland Park, London. The original may be seen in the Victoria & Albert Museum. This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
