Fox & Pheasants Loom Woven Tapestry - Requires Rod Size 4

This tapestry was originally woven by Morris and Co in 1887. It was designed by John H Dearle (1860 – 1932) who later became Morris and Company’s chief textile designer. Dearle and other associates worked on the ‘Fox and Pheasants’ during the Royal Jubilee Exhibition held in Manchester in 1887. The tapestry was finished in 1888 and subsequently bought for the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, England, where it remains today. This piece was produced around 1910 by the firm of Morris & Company, the firm originally established by William Morris at Merton Abbey, Surrey. From studying an old French Arts and Crafts manual, Morris taught himself the technique of weaving, and thereafter taught his workmen the technique, and is thereby attributed with reviving the craft of tapestry-weaving in England during the last quarter of the 19th century. This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
